An Overt Literary Human by ~petit-chou-fleur:iconpetit-chou-fleur:

Over.
Overt.
Overtones.

The jumble of letters
Came suddenly
From a mindset
Of rigidity.

I was never set on
Rhyme and
Syllabic sequences,
Too square.

There were quests
For more circular edges,
Greater freedom;

A chance to breathe.

But look where it got us...
Back to the overtly human,

Pushing the boundaries
Until letters are no more
A sequence,
But a tool.

Something to live for,
Something to be ruled by,
Something...

To Hold On To.

Capitalise,
Minimalise,
Categorise,
Monopolise,

We are all subordinate
To Words:
As they flash in our minds,
Bombard our sights,
Infiltrate eardrums.

Under siege.

As they find a new pattern:
Battle-like in approach,
But gradually softening
To a thought-provoking,
Sweet novella;

Kind on the heart
And head,
Yet heavy on the eyelids.

Strangely subjected
To sin.
Fabricated,
Indulgent,
Self-righteous
Sin.

Who said
Words were Safe -
And pious?

God-fearingly devilish,
Wearing hearts on sleeves.
No remorse.

I'd say I was clinically prone
To Words.

Enrapturing,
Capturing,
Snaring,
Daring.

Emanating from the mind,
Flowing in fingertips,
Twisting heartstrings,
Triggering brainwaves -

I'm divinely prone to words

As they leak to
And from my
Infected page.

The meanings are
A contagious disease,
Which cannot be contained.

I'm helplessing craving
These lines on my page.

Though ultimately
I'm only:

Hum.
Human.
Humane.

Author's Comments

Well this was something new I decided to try. Adding more effects and trying to add a few clever twists.

To anyone who reads poetry it should be quite obvious what this is about. But as I'm going to university in a couple of weeks to study English Literature, I felt like I wanted to write something about what fascinates me about language in general.

Tried to use a bit more punctuation than usual to make the tone less ambiguous, let me know what you think and give me some tips on contuinuity, I've been struggling to sustain an idea properly in my poetry these days.

Hope you like it as I haven't posted anything for months!
Sorry!

I really like this one, the flow and the feel of the poem are a lot more clear, crisp and effective, in my own personal opinion. It's a very good use of vocabulary, (thank God!) it's a shame how much the English language is abused now-a-days, it's good to see someone treating it with respect. Nice job. This is my favourite poem of yours.

Mary had a lamb,
His eyes black as coals.
If we play very quiet, my lamb,
Mary never has to know.

Starts quite slowly, and I didn't think it was a particular gem of yours - but then I came to the mid-section, and it just exploded into an incandescent rainbow of expression. Loved it from there onwards. The way the end mellows really works with the tone of the language. [Re-reading that, I sound like a Hippie, don't I =S].
But, honestly, one of the - if not undeniably - my favourite of your poems. Length works well too.
We need more of this, more I tell you, more.
Although I somehow think the only reason you did this was to while away the time until York welcomes you to it's hallowed halls.

That's so good to hear :) You always flatter me with your comments. I'm glad you think I achieved some of the tings I keep trying to do lol.

It is, and I'm also sick of seeing the same sort of poems regurgitated by people here on deviantart.

Thank you so much, it means a lot

Oooo I like that description 'incandescent rainbow of expression' Glad you liked it, and I see what you mean about the beggining, but I was going for something a bit more abstract just to see how it went. Haha hippie wouldnt be something I'd ever associate with you somehow!
It probably was, also i was feeling a bit down about everyone leaving me lol.

I will try to bring more Chris at least for your sake (and so you don't moan) :giggle:

Thanks a lot Chris :)

Tonight I will attempt to travel back in time and change history. You'll know I've succeeded if Germany loses World War II and Wednesday comes After Tuesday
